PHOTO EVENT OPPORTUNITIES

FUTURE STPS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 

A specific date for a future exhibition has not been set.  However, it’s not too early to start planning your submissions for the next photo exhibition.  Here are some preliminary guidelines to help you prepare for the competition:

• Theme - To be determined.  Please submit ideas for consideration.
• The show will be juried.  An independent juror will select and judge entries submitted for the show.
• The show will be open to all STPS members.  Non-members desiring to compete may do so by signing up to become a member before the exhibition.
• Each member may submit up to three (3) photos.
• Each member is guaranteed to have one (1) photo in the show.
• The entry fee will be determined and announced later.
• Photos may be color or monochrome
• Photos must be framed.  Frames must be black wood or metal, not overly ornate with wire hanger installed (no sawtooth hangers will be accepted).  If matted, mattes must be white or off white and no more than four (4) inches wide.
• Framed works must not exceed 24 x 36 inches.

ALL SAINTS” DAY  (November)
 
All Saints' Day is a really unique event.  Most of the cemeteries are quite old and are cleaned up for the blessing of the graves.  The local people are very friendly and are quite interested in sharing information concerning their family history.  Many of the families have resided in the area since the community was founded.  With one exception, the cemeteries are open to the public year round.  Keep this in mind for those eerie, foggy mornings.

The Williams 1 Cemetery is the oldest in the community.  It is located on the bank of Bayou Lacombe and the bodies of those initially interred there were brought in by pirogue.  In addition to the graves and monuments, the cemetery has an ancient cypress with a large, complex burl that offers innumerable macro opportunities.  Anyone interested in atmospheric or historic site photography should definitely put this on their calendar for next year. 
 

LOUISIANA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL (December)

The Louisiana Renaissance Festival runs weekends in November and early December.  For the unfamiliar, the Festival is a mock medieval village that presents medieval entertainment including performances, games, presentations, crafts, food and beer.  There are some really great photo ops including jousting and full contact combat.  Further, not only the performers but many of the attendees dress for the event making for some unique people pictures.  You can get detailed information, directions and even buy tickets at the Festival's web site www.larf.org.


SHOOTING CALENDAR
 
And speaking of calendars, it would be a good idea to put together a calendar of regular shooting opportunities that occur throughout the year.  This would be particularly useful for the more obscure events such as All Saints Day and could ultimately be incorporated into this web page so that it is easily accessible to everyone.  Each of you must have one or more regular events that you enjoy shooting.  Please send us your information using the web site contact form so we can add it to our photo op calendar.

2013 PHOTO EXHIBIT: The St. Tammany Photographic Society displayed the work of some of our members at the St. Tammany Art Association on January 19-Febraury 2, 2013. This two-week exhibit highlighted the photographic works of local and regional artists working in film and digital mediums. On the right are a few scenes from the opening reception.  Overall, it was a great success and we are planning a repeat performance sometime in the future.
